I think Eragon was WAY better. Eldest totally copied the Star Wars plot. It even had the line "Search your feelings, you know it to be true!"(Vader, ESB) in it. It also had "Will you keep an eye on him? Two eyes if I can spare them!" (Gandalf, FOTR) Paolini turned into such a copy cat! To get over the post-Eldest reading blues read Inkheart by Cornerlia Funke. It's very good.
First of all, the Gandalf one from LOTR is really. You will keep your eye on him, and gandalf said Two eyes, as often as i can spare them. It is not the same thing. As for copying the Starwars theme, i have to agree, but at least it is not the exact same.
Now that i think about it, i see what you mean. It is some what the same, but in Starwars, Luke knew there were other Jedies, on the Light side. In Eldest, Eragon did not know that there was another rider besides Galabatorix. Big difference there. Also, last time i checked, Eragon does not see broms spirit and talk to him, like Luke did. Other parts are the same, but most are different. It depends on how you look at it. Remember, Eragon is in the "past" and Starwars is in the "future" unless you listen to that startup thing, i just never understood that. if it was a long time ago, we should have that technology now...
Predicatable, yes. Knowing exactly how it is going to unfold, no. Sure parts of it are predictable, but others are not. To not make this a spoiler, i can't say too much. But those of you who have read it know what i mean about the ending, i was not expecting that at all. Parts of it you would not beable to even think of happening. Remember, and this is NOT a spoiler, that it switches back and forth between Eragon and Roran, it is not strait forward like Eragon, how it is just about him, now it breaks up into 3 different people, Eragon, Roran, and the new leader of the Varden (cant say name, it would be a spoiler).
